Brad Coffey - Associate

Brad Coffey is a senior associate with Beck, Redden & Secrest, L.L.P. He joined the firm in September of 2001 after serving as a law clerk for the Honorable Thad Heartfield, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Mr. Coffey’s practice focuses on complex litigation, having represented plaintiffs and defendants in matters concerning contractual disputes, professional liability, products liability/personal injury, white collar crime, oil and gas matters, intellectual property rights, and international business disputes.

Mr. Coffey received his B.A. in History from Southwestern University in 1996. He received his J.D., cum laude, from South Texas College of Law in 1999, where he served as Note and Comment Editor for the South Texas Law Review. A member of the law school’s varsity moot court team, Mr. Coffey won brief writing competitions at the state and national levels. While in law school, he was selected as a Langdell Scholar and as a member of the Order of the Lytae.

Representative Cases

  • Represented national tax and financial representation firm against proposed collective action for unpaid wages under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The case settled favorably following the dismissal of all claims against our client’s CEO.
  • Represented international shipping company in criminal matter brought by the Department of Justice for alleged violations of law concerning maintenance of books and records with respect to the handling of waste oils. On the eve of trial, the Firm obtained dismissal of eight of the ten counts brought against our client. The case currently is before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Represented Dallas real estate owner/investor against claims of negligence and gross negligence related to the condition and management of properties. The case settled favorably at trial following the cross examination of plaintiffs’ corporate representative.
  • Represented major pharmaceutical company in products liability action in Jefferson County, Texas. Following a 2 week trial, the jury returned a verdict in our client’s favor — the first defense win for our client in that jurisdiction.
  • Represented a large Texas law firm in a professional liability case in which the plaintiffs sought damages in excess of $150 million arising out of the prosecution of litigation under the Federal False Claims Act. Following a 2 ½ week jury trial, the case settled favorably.
  • Represented major oil company against claims brought by over 400 current and former employees related to the company’s workers’ compensation insurance program. Following three separate trials filed by the plaintiffs in three different courts in Jefferson County, Texas, in which the plaintiffs sought combined damages in excess of $300 million, the Firm obtained take nothing judgments for our client in all three trials.
  • Represented major oil company against claims brought by the State of Texas for unpaid royalties. The Firm obtained summary judgment in our client’s favor, and the case settled favorably while on appeal.
